How long
will balloons last? Mylars (the shiny metallic balloons) will last
about a week. Untreated latex will last about 24 hours but the length of time varies with
environmental factors such as temperature and exposure to sunlight. What can I do to make them
last longer? Balloons like cold air. If you have to travel with the balloons, use the air
conditioner in the summer. Indoors, don't let them float against a stippled ceiling.
Children love balloons, but
are they safe? As with anything, adults must use common sense when choosing products for
children. Balloons are safe. Common sense dictates that a child (or a
pet) (or an adult for that matter!) should never be allowed to put a deflated
balloon in his or her mouth.
I've heard balloons can be
bad for the environment. Is this true? Releasing helium filled
latex balloons outdoors can be dangerous to wildlife...so keep them inside! On the
other hand, latex balloons are made from the sap of the rubber tree. Utilizing latex makes
the rubber tree a more valuable resource, so fewer are destroyed and more are saved
in the ongoing development of the rain forests.
I have a very
high ceiling. What if one of the balloons gets loose? If you have another helium balloon available take these steps:
- tie on enough string to reach the ceiling
- attach a piece of tape, doubled over to the top of the balloon
- let out the string so that the "rescue" balloon rises to meet the stranded
balloon
- position the tape so that it touches the stranded balloon and the two balloons are
attached
- Slowly and carefully, pull the two back down.
Otherwise, wait for it to fall and retrieve it.
