MORE ABOUT JANE

Jane McCaa is the daughter of a clergyman and a teacher. Born and raised in Scotland, she moved to Bristol, England to go to Bristol University, where she read for a first degree in Greek, Ancient History and Archaeology, her research degree was in the religion of the Hittites (published as The Weather-God in Hittite Anatolia - it's more good-humoured than it sounds, and was a new approach to understanding how environment can affect religious perception) and, rather a long time later, also gained a teaching qualification in Religious Studies. In between whiles she also gained a Diploma in Business Studies, which has helped her make a living many a time.

Jane has usually worked in and around education, whether promoting it, publishing for it or doing it as a researcher and teacher. She has taught at everything from primary to university level, with a major part of her career history her years as part of a dedicated and enthusiastic team of Lecturers in Classics at Filton College, Bristol. The questions raised by her students while she taught in the Open University, and her own research curiosity led to the publication of two books on everyday living in the Ancient World: A Day in the Life of Ancient Rome and A Day in the Life of Ancient Athens.  Both are still in print.

Jane has written plenty of ephemera, including feature articles and reviews. She was a film critic for some years - and still misses it.

Apart from a varied and challenging working life, Jane has a wide range of interests - she is a trained singer and has given recitals and run a choir, she has climbed rock faces, pored over war-gaming, spent many happy hours knitting and embroidering, she collects languages, and has in recent years been designing and making jewellery for herself and on commission. The martial arts in the Delos series are based on skills she knows about (and some she knows how to do).

She started writing science fiction by instinct, even before she knew what it was, starting with a story about a girl taking her robot sister to school, complete with kiddie's illustrations - perhaps she ought to look it out. She has been working on the Delos series for some years - book two is now complete and book three being hacked into shape - watch this website. A short story, The Dig, was anthologised by Black Cat Books in 2001. Jane now plans to concentrate on writing, although she continues to do some teaching (once a teacher … ). There's more to come!
