  Frequently asked questions

What equipment do I need to bring with me?
We have a digital camera for your use.  However if you have your own camera equipment it’s a good idea to bring it with you; either because you are familiar with it; or because you want to learn more about its functions. Don’t forget the instruction manual.

Should I bring a film camera or a digital camera?
It doesn’t matter. The principles of photography are the same.
Our tuition is based around digital cameras; but if you wish; having set up a shot with our digital equipment you can then shoot it on your film camera.

I’m just a beginner is this too complicated for me?
Not at all.  Our tuition is 1:1 so the tuition is tailored exactly to your needs.

Are some of your modules too in depth for me at my level?
No.  We have split up photography into its fundamental basics which all photographers need to know about.  A newcomer to photography can study the same module as a professional, the difference is that they will be working at different levels.

Can I bring my partner or friend with me?
Yes your partner or friend can come along to share the cost and equipment. This will cost an extra £100/day, and your tuition will then be 1:2 and not 1:1. The whole ethos of our modules is for you to learn by hands on experience with 1:1  or 1:2 tuition and feedback.  This is not possible with large groups, we do not therefore cater for more than two students at a time unless by special arrangement.

Where can I stay?
A wide variety of accommodation is available locally starting from bed and breakfast at around £25, ranging up to 4 star hotels.   Contact us for details.

Can I  bring my young children with me?
The studio is not a suitable environment for young children; except for brief periods when they act as models; under close parental supervision.

What clothes should I wear?
We don’t recommend you wear your best clothes in our studio. It’s also advisable to bring warmer items such as a fleece, as temperatures are very difficult to regulate in a photographic studio – particularly in winter. If working outside stout shoes (or walking boots), waterproof jacket, and suitable warm clothing layers are strongly recommended.

Should I bring my laptop computer?
If you are used to viewing your images on your laptop please feel free to bring it along.
The majority of the modules are not necessarily computer dependant so this is entirely
at your discretion.

I don’t use computers are you going to confuse me?
No, there are other ways of viewing digital images apart from using computers, so the amount of computer use is entirely up to you.

Should I bring examples of my photography with me?
Yes this is a very good idea.  If you have any photographs you would like us to evaluate; or examples of problems you have encountered; then please feel free to bring them along.

Are there any extra or hidden costs?
No, except should you require prints as below.

I want prints of my work how do I go about this?
If you are working digitally with your own camera you may have enough memory to store all your work yourself to be printed later. Otherwise we can supply a disc of your images for you to have printed. We do not operate a printing service, but can show you how to print out digitally from Photoshop if you are not familiar with this process.

A 24 hour Kodak 35mm. film processing service is available from a local chemist – we have no connection with them and can accept no liability should you choose to use them.
